TikTok retargeting can remind people who visited a website, watched a video, or engaged with an account, depending on the audience sources available. Build segments only when the business can show each group a relevant next message and collect the data under the appropriate privacy choices.

Choose an audience source and time window
Website visitors and product viewers can indicate site interest; video viewers or account engagers can reflect content interest. Define how recent an interaction should be for the next message. A short window may suit an urgent offer, while a longer window may fit a high-consideration purchase. The best window depends on the buying cycle and current platform options.
Use exclusions to separate the journey
- Exclude recent buyers from prospecting reminders when appropriate.
- Separate high-intent actions from general video engagement.
- Avoid overlapping groups with the same creative and offer.
- Check available audience size and refresh cadence before launch.
Match the message to the signal
A video viewer may need product education; someone who started checkout may need clear delivery or payment information. Do not treat every prior interaction as purchase intent. Keep the landing page and creative consistent with the audience’s stage.
Measure retargeting carefully
Retargeting audiences are already closer to a decision, so platform-attributed ROAS can look stronger than prospecting. That does not show whether every sale was incremental. Compare new and returning customers, frequency, total conversions, and a holdout or lift test where practical. Ensure Pixel and server events are deduplicated, and never bypass a privacy choice to expand an audience.
