TikTok Ads Targeting: Broad vs. Interest vs. Custom Audiences

TikTok Ads broad, interest, and custom-audience targeting solve different reach problems. Broad targeting gives the delivery system more room to find likely responders; interest-based targeting adds a contextual signal; custom audiences can reach people who already interacted with a site, account, or customer list when the account supports that source.

Use broad targeting when the signal is reliable

Broad targeting may work when the campaign has a clear conversion goal, enough event volume, and a strong creative that qualifies viewers. It can be difficult to diagnose if the purchase or lead event is inaccurate, so validate the event before treating the algorithm’s results as meaningful.

Use interests as a deliberate constraint

Interest targeting can help test a relevant context or narrow a very broad prospecting pool. More restrictions do not automatically improve quality. If the audience becomes too small or delivery costs rise, the added signal may be limiting reach without adding useful intent.

Use custom audiences with a clear role

  • Retarget site visitors or product viewers where permitted.
  • Separate existing customers from new-customer acquisition when useful.
  • Exclude recent converters from messages they no longer need.
  • Check audience size, refresh timing, and consent rules.

TikTok currently requires at least 1,000 matched users before a Custom Audience can be used in an ad group. The available-audience estimate may be lower because opt-in status, age, location, and other factors affect who can be reached.

Compare audiences fairly

Hold the creative, offer, conversion event, and reporting window as constant where possible. Use a test plan that states what each audience is expected to change: reach, cost, lead quality, or purchase volume. Account for overlap between groups and do not make a winner call from a handful of conversions.

Let outcomes guide complexity

Start with the fewest audiences needed to answer the question. Add constraints only when evidence shows a meaningful improvement in qualified outcomes. Review cost per qualified lead or contribution per order, not just low-cost clicks, and document any privacy or eligibility limits that affect audience availability.
