A YouTube campaign can collect views without producing a qualified B2B inquiry. It can also influence a later visit that arrives through search or direct traffic. A useful report keeps those signals visible without turning them into the same claim.
First decide what the campaign should do: build awareness, encourage more channel viewing, or generate a site action. Then choose the measures that describe that job and the business outcome that follows.
Check the current campaign type and inventory
Google upgraded Video Action Campaigns to Demand Gen in May 2026. Demand Gen can serve across YouTube and other Google surfaces, so check the current campaign settings and channel controls before interpreting a row as YouTube-only activity.
Choose whether the test should reach viewers on YouTube alone or use a broader set of placements. Record the selected channels, device or format constraints, audience, video versions, and landing destination. Keep the campaign type and migration date in the reporting record when you compare older video campaigns with current Demand Gen results.
Give views and conversions separate jobs
A video view is an exposure or engagement measure, not a lead. Use view count, view rate, watch time, and frequency to understand whether people had an opportunity to notice the message. Use a website action, form completion, booked meeting, or qualified opportunity to describe what happened after that.
Demand Gen can also optimize for YouTube channel actions such as subscriptions or follow-on views when the Google Ads account is linked to the YouTube channel. Those can be useful audience-building goals, but they still do not represent a B2B sales inquiry. Decide whether they are a secondary observation or the campaign’s actual objective before putting them in the bidding signal.
Read engaged-view and view-through conversions correctly
An engaged-view conversion is a platform-defined conversion after a qualifying video interaction. Google’s current criteria vary by format: a skippable in-stream viewer generally needs to watch at least 10 seconds, or the full ad if it is shorter; in-feed and Shorts use a five-second threshold, with an additional call-to-action path for Shorts. The viewer must then convert within the action’s engaged-view window.
Google reports engaged-view conversions alongside conversion data and lets advertisers separate ad-event types so they can distinguish click-through from engaged-view conversions. Review the configured window and the report segment before comparing results. The guide to view-through versus click-through conversions covers the general attribution distinction.
A view-through conversion is different again: it records a later conversion after an eligible impression without an interaction. It does not mean the viewer submitted a lead form after watching the full video. Keep that column separate from clicks, engaged-view conversions, and CRM-confirmed outcomes.
Connect exposure to the lead path
Use consistent campaign identifiers and UTMs to preserve the visit source in analytics and the CRM. Check that the landing page, form event, source field, and sales handoff work on the real visitor path. Compare the ad platform’s attributed events with completed inquiries and later qualification, using the same reporting dates and definitions.
If YouTube has a long influence path, keep the stages visible: ad exposure, engaged view, site visit, inquiry, sales acceptance, and opportunity. A change in one stage may help explain movement in another, but it does not establish that the video caused the later outcome.
When an investment decision depends on incrementality, use a suitable lift or holdout design where available. The guide to holdout tests when platform attribution is not enough explains how to separate an observed attribution path from a causal test. The guide to B2B brand campaign measurement covers a related reach-versus-pipeline question.
