Separate View-Through Conversions From Click-Through Results in Paid Media Reports

Quiet executive workspace with laptop closed, notebook, and printed pipeline chart

A campaign report can show conversions after people saw an ad even when they did not click it. That can be useful context for display and social campaigns, but a post-view conversion is not the same as a post-click response or proof that the ad created an incremental sale.

Keep these results in separate rows. Record each platform’s definition and attribution window, then compare them with CRM outcomes and, when the decision requires causal evidence, a suitable holdout test.

Label the interaction behind the conversion

A post-click conversion follows an ad click. A view-through conversion is recorded after an ad impression or view without a click, within the platform’s configured rules and lookback window. The exact definition can vary by campaign type and platform.

Google Ads, for example, reports view-through conversions separately from click-based conversion columns for many Display and video campaigns. Google distinguishes an ad impression from a video view, and its current guidance says most view-through conversions are for reporting rather than bidding, with specific campaign exceptions.

LinkedIn describes conversions as either view-through or post-click within the selected conversion window. Do not label every platform’s view signal as if it represented the same amount of attention or the same user action.

Record the window and attribution rule

Write down the view and click windows used for each conversion action, along with the platform’s attribution rule and the date the settings were last changed. A wider window can count more conversions after impressions. LinkedIn lets advertisers choose windows, and a window change affects future counting rather than rewriting historical totals.

When comparing campaigns or months, use consistent settings where practical. If a platform or event category changes its default window, mark the effective date in the report. Otherwise, an increase may reflect a changed measurement rule rather than a change in demand.

Keep post-view, post-click, and CRM outcomes separate

Use distinct fields or report rows for:

  • Post-click conversions: actions attributed after an ad click under the chosen window.
  • Post-view conversions: actions attributed after an impression or view without a click.
  • CRM outcomes: qualified leads, opportunities, and closed revenue recorded by the business.
  • Incremental lift: the difference estimated by an experiment designed to compare exposed and control groups.

Google Ads may show view-through conversions in its view-through and “All conversions” reporting, while the main “Conversions” column has different rules. LinkedIn can credit a conversion to the most recent click or view under its attribution setup. Avoid adding platform totals together as if their windows, deduplication rules, and underlying populations were identical.

The guide to reconciling ad-platform, analytics, and CRM conversion counts covers the wider reporting differences. Use CRM outcomes to check whether attributed actions became qualified business results.

Check how multiple ad interactions are handled

Ask whether the platform excludes a conversion after a person interacted with another ad, assigns credit to the last eligible click or view, or can credit more than one ad set. These rules differ. Google says its view-through conversions automatically exclude conversions by people who also interacted with any of its other ads, with exceptions for certain campaign types. LinkedIn documents last-touch options that can credit each ad set or the most recent ad set.

Keep the platform’s reported value intact in its own column. If a cross-platform dashboard needs one combined number, define the deduplication rule and data source explicitly; do not assume that each platform has already removed overlap with other platforms.

Use a holdout when the decision is about incrementality

A post-view conversion says that an eligible impression preceded a conversion under a platform’s rules. By itself, it does not show what would have happened without the impression. The person may already have intended to buy, seen another campaign, or been reached by sales.

For a budget decision that depends on whether the campaign caused additional outcomes, use a test designed for incrementality and keep its result separate from attributed conversions. The holdout-test guide explains how to frame that question. For brand campaigns, the measurement guide keeps exposure, perception, and pipeline in different measures.

Keep a decision-ready report

Before reviewing performance, confirm that the team can answer:

  • Which platform, campaign type, and conversion action are included?
  • What counts as an impression, view, and click for that report?
  • What are the post-view and post-click windows?
  • Which columns are used for bidding, platform reporting, and CRM validation?
  • When did the definitions or settings last change?
  • Is the business decision about attributed activity or incremental impact?

If the campaign has a long sales cycle, leave room for qualification and opportunity data to mature. A post-view count can be an early platform signal; it should not be renamed “pipeline” before the CRM records show that outcome.
