XML Sitemap Lastmod: When to Update the Modified Date

so-editorial-624-empty-boardroom

The last-modified value in an XML sitemap can help crawlers understand when a URL’s content changed. Updating it every time a sitemap file is regenerated weakens the signal and can make routine changes look more substantive than they are.

Use lastmod for meaningful page updates

Update the timestamp when the page’s main content or important structured information changes in a way that matters to users. A template build, cache refresh, or sitemap regeneration alone is not a content update.

Set a consistent time basis and preserve accurate timestamps. Do not backdate or assign the same current time to every URL without checking whether each page changed.

Distinguish page content from technical maintenance

Some technical changes affect the page’s usefulness, such as a corrected canonical or a major new section. Other changes, such as a global navigation tweak, may not mean every article’s substantive content was revised.

Define the rule with editorial and engineering owners so the sitemap reflects actual page-level change rather than whichever system last wrote the file.

Validate sitemap output

Check representative URLs, date formats, duplicate entries, canonical destinations, and inclusion rules. Confirm that only intended indexable pages appear.

Compare timestamps with the content management system’s revision history. Unexpectedly identical dates across a large site may indicate automation rather than actual updates.

Monitor without overreacting

Use crawl and indexation reports to evaluate whether important pages are discovered. A recent lastmod value does not guarantee immediate crawling or indexing.

Our guide to XML sitemaps and robots.txt explains the broader role of sitemap signals.

Practical checklist

  • Check the rendered page and technical signals rather than relying on one report.
  • State the purpose and limits of each URL, directive, or measure.
  • Re-crawl or review performance after changes and document the result.
