Brand traffic can keep an organic report looking healthy while nonbrand discovery weakens. After a tracking migration, the effect becomes harder to see: source fields change, redirects alter landing pages, query grouping is lost, or a new property applies different filters. The total line may look stable because existing users still find the brand.
The Brand–Nonbrand Reconciliation Sheet separates those signals and checks the first break introduced by the migration.
Freeze the comparison
Record:
- migration date and systems affected;
- pre- and post-migration properties;
- time zone, consent, filters, and attribution settings;
- brand and nonbrand query definitions;
- page set and redirects;
- conversion and qualified-demand definitions;
- baseline and comparison windows.
Do not compare a partial migration week with a complete historical month. Preserve an overlap window where both old and new tracking can be tested if possible.
Define brand and nonbrand operationally
Brand queries may include the company name, product name, domain, or known branded variations. Nonbrand queries express a problem, category, service, or comparison without relying on the brand.
Write the rule and examples. Do not let a report classify the same query differently after the migration without a changelog. If the brand has a generic word in its name, document the ambiguous terms and keep them in a review bucket.
Replay the acquisition path
For each period and query group, compare:
| Layer | Brand | Nonbrand | Migration check | |—|—|—|—| | impressions | count and query coverage | count and query coverage | Search Console property and filters | | clicks | count and landing pages | count and landing pages | redirects and canonical pages | | sessions | analytics sessions | analytics sessions | source processing and consent | | contact | forms, calls, bookings | forms, calls, bookings | events and identifiers | | accepted | sales-accepted records | sales-accepted records | CRM joins and stage rules | | mature outcome | opportunity/value | opportunity/value | cohort maturity |
A fall in nonbrand sessions with stable Search Console clicks suggests a tracking or join issue. A fall in both impressions and clicks requires a search diagnosis. A stable visit count with lower acceptance points further down the journey.
Inspect source processing and redirects
Google Analytics’ campaign and traffic-source documentation explains how campaign parameters and click IDs affect source dimensions. After migration, verify:
- redirects preserve the final URL and campaign context;
- cross-domain or subdomain settings are correct;
- consent and ad blockers do not change one segment more than another;
- filters or internal traffic rules are consistent;
- default channel grouping has not changed silently;
- source values are normalized without erasing raw values.
Use a synthetic navigation path for brand and nonbrand examples. Save the raw URL, final URL, analytics event, and CRM record state.
Separate brand demand from nonbrand discovery
Brand and nonbrand audiences have different jobs. Brand users may already know the company and need confirmation, support, or a direct route. Nonbrand users need vocabulary, proof, comparison, or a diagnostic path. A migration that merges them can make the site look efficient while hiding a weaker acquisition pipeline.
Review landing-page mix and next actions separately. A nonbrand page should not be judged by the same immediate conversion expectation as a branded contact page, but it still needs a clear next decision and internal route.
Check the commercial path
For a sample of brand and nonbrand records, inspect:
- query or source context where available;
- landing page and offer;
- requested service or problem;
- first owned action;
- acceptance and disqualification reasons;
- opportunity maturity;
- duplicate or source-unknown state.
Do not infer that a branded record was caused by the migration or that a nonbrand record is incremental. Preserve the confidence boundary.
Use four migration verdicts
Measurement break: source, query, session, or CRM join changed without a business evidence change.
Acquisition break: nonbrand impressions or clicks declined in a comparable search segment while measurement remains stable.
Journey break: visits remain, but page, form, response, or acceptance quality changed.
No proven break: differences are within the defined uncertainty or cohort is immature.
Each verdict needs a repair owner and recheck. Do not rewrite nonbrand content until a measurement break is excluded.
Preserve uncertainty by query family
Do not let a brand/nonbrand binary erase ambiguous demand. Keep a third review group for generic terms that contain a brand-like word, product names used as category language, and queries whose classification depends on a spelling or locale rule. Report the size of that group and the rule used to resolve it.
Review page families as well as queries. A nonbrand query that lands on a branded homepage may show a healthy brand session while hiding a poor intent match. Conversely, a nonbrand diagnostic page may create a later branded search that is useful but not directly attributable as incremental. Record the sequence without forcing a causal claim.
Reforecast the next period
Build three scenarios:
- tracking repaired, nonbrand demand returns to the comparable baseline;
- tracking is stable, but nonbrand visibility remains lower;
- total traffic stays stable while nonbrand share and commercial quality change.
Record assumptions, affected pages, confidence, and the date the next mature cohort will be reviewed. Use ranges and retain unknowns.
The next review should compare the same query groups, pages, and commercial definitions after the repair. If the migration changed the available fields permanently, preserve a bridged version of the old rule and label the break in the historical series.
The Brand–Nonbrand Reconciliation Sheet is complete when it contains the migration timeline, definitions, query samples, source and redirect tests, layered comparison, record replay, verdict, scenario forecast, and owner. A stable brand line is not evidence that nonbrand acquisition is healthy. The distinction must be measured deliberately.
