Board reporting should show how marketing relates to revenue without implying that every attributed touch caused a sale. A concise report connects evidence, investment, uncertainty, and the decisions leadership needs to make.

Separate actuals from modeled contribution
Report closed-won or recognized outcomes from authoritative financial sources separately from sourced pipeline, influenced pipeline, and platform-attributed conversions.
Define the population, time period, currency basis, and attribution method for each figure. Label modeled or estimated results rather than presenting them as audited revenue.
Show movement and maturity
Compare current results with a relevant baseline and note changes in strategy, pricing, capacity, or tracking. Explain the lag between investment and outcomes when the sales cycle extends beyond the reporting period.
Use cohort maturity to explain why recent pipeline or revenue may remain incomplete. Avoid treating open opportunities as realized revenue.
Connect investment to the decision
Summarize what was funded, what evidence emerged, what remains uncertain, and which options leadership must choose among. Keep operational details in an appendix unless they affect the decision.
Include downside risks such as channel concentration, lead quality, sales capacity, and data gaps. Be direct about what evidence would change the recommendation.
Make the report reproducible
Keep definitions, data sources, and calculation notes available to finance and operations. Preserve prior snapshots so later reviews can compare the forecast with eventual outcomes.

Practical checklist
- State the date basis, definitions, and assumptions behind each measure.
- Separate observed outcomes from estimates and movement in existing records.
- Use the report to name a decision, owner, and next review date.
