Contracted ARR vs. Recognized Revenue

so-editorial-504-empty-collaboration-room

Contracted annual recurring revenue (ARR) and recognized revenue are related but different measures. ARR is commonly used as an operating view of recurring contract value normalized to a year; recognized revenue follows accounting policies as products or services are delivered. Treating them as interchangeable can create misleading reports about campaign impact, growth, or forecast performance.

Know what each measure is designed to show

Contracted ARR is a snapshot of recurring value under active contracts, calculated using an organization’s stated rules. Teams may differ on how they handle ramped contracts, usage-based charges, discounts, renewals, or foreign exchange. The definition must be written down before comparing teams or periods.

Recognized revenue is recorded over time according to the applicable accounting framework and contract obligations. A customer can sign an annual contract and pay upfront while revenue is recognized across the service period. The timing of cash, booking, ARR, and revenue therefore may not match.

  • ARR: an operationalized annual view of recurring contract value.
  • Bookings: the value of contracts signed under the company’s rules.
  • Recognized revenue: amounts recorded as delivery obligations are satisfied.
  • Cash: money received, which may arrive before or after recognition.

Keep marketing reporting aligned with the decision

A campaign analysis should specify which measure it uses and why. A pipeline or bookings view may help describe near-term commercial activity; recognized revenue may be more suitable for a finance-aligned outcome view, though attribution and timing still require care. Do not label contracted ARR as revenue in a dashboard.

For each measure, document source fields, inclusion rules, currency conversion, contract amendments, and the reporting period. Reconcile material differences with finance rather than trying to force the totals to match.

Use a reconciliation rather than a blended number

A bridge can show new contracts, expansions, reductions, cancellations, recognition timing, and other adjustments separately. This explains why a period’s ARR movement differs from revenue recorded during that period.

Accounting treatment depends on contracts and applicable standards. Keep the marketing definition useful for analysis, and rely on the finance function for official revenue reporting and policy decisions.
