Microsoft Ads Quality Score: How to Use the Diagnostic

A quality score is a platform diagnostic that summarizes signals related to whether an ad is likely to be useful for a search. It can help flag a weak connection between a keyword, ad, and landing page. It is not a revenue metric, a guarantee of placement, or a complete explanation of why an auction was won or lost.

Read it as a clue, not a verdict

A low score can point toward weak expected click-through behavior, poor relevance, or a landing experience that does not meet the searcher’s need. The exact components and reporting scale are platform-defined and can change. Use the current Microsoft Ads help text for the score shown in the account.

A high score does not prove that the keyword is profitable. A relevant ad can still attract a low-value audience, and a conversion action can count activity that sales does not consider qualified. Keep platform diagnostics separate from commercial outcomes.

Use a focused review sequence

Start with the actual queries that triggered the keyword. Then compare the ad’s promise with the page’s headline, content, and next step. Check mobile usability and load behavior, especially if the traffic comes from smaller screens. A score cannot identify every problem in the user journey, but these checks often reveal a fixable mismatch.

Make one meaningful change at a time where possible. Rewriting keywords, ad copy, landing page, and bidding simultaneously makes it hard to know which change affected the result.

  • Confirm the keyword still represents the intended search.
  • Make ad copy specific to the group’s intent.
  • Ensure the landing page answers the same question clearly.

Measure the business result

After improving relevance, compare qualified conversion rate, cost per opportunity, and downstream value over a suitable period. Treat quality score movement as supporting evidence. If the score improves but useful outcomes do not, revisit audience intent and conversion measurement rather than optimizing the score in isolation.
