GCLID is Google Click Identifier, a URL parameter commonly used to connect an ad click with downstream website activity and conversion measurement. GBRAID and WBRAID are separate Google click identifiers used in privacy-constrained measurement contexts. They are not interchangeable spellings of one field, and an implementation should preserve each value as received.

Three identifiers, different measurement contexts
Which identifier appears depends on the click, platform, and measurement environment. Google’s product behavior and supported workflows can change, so use the current Ads and Analytics documentation for the account’s specific conversion setup rather than assuming every click includes a GCLID.
- GCLID: a widely used click identifier for website measurement and offline conversion workflows where supported.
- GBRAID and WBRAID: distinct identifiers associated with privacy-preserving measurement scenarios.
- A missing value is not proof that a click was invalid or that a tag is broken.
Capture parameters without overwriting them
If the business needs to connect ad interactions to later CRM outcomes, capture supported click identifiers on the landing session and persist them alongside the lead or transaction record. Keep the parameter name and value intact. Do not convert one identifier into another, trim it beyond safe URL decoding, or place it in a field that another integration overwrites.
Use a first-party storage approach that respects the site’s consent choices and retention policy. Confirm whether redirects, cross-domain navigation, forms, and server-side integrations preserve the values. Test each path with a controlled click or documented test setup.
- Capture gclid, gbraid, and wbraid in separate fields.
- Preserve source timestamps and the record that received each identifier.
- Check redirects, URL cleanup, form submission, and CRM field mapping.
Use the right conversion path
Online tag-based conversions, enhanced conversions, and offline conversion imports each have their own requirements. A click ID can be useful for matching an offline outcome, but it does not replace accurate event time, conversion value, currency, consent handling, or deduplication. Confirm the current upload specification before building a data pipeline.
If the identifier is unavailable, use another supported measurement method rather than fabricating a value. Keep identity and conversion data limited to what the platform and the organization are permitted to process.
- Match upload method to the conversion source and the platform’s current specification.
- Use a stable order or conversion ID when deduplicating repeated uploads.
- Monitor diagnostics for format, timing, and matching issues.
Debug by following one test record
Follow one controlled ad interaction from landing page to analytics event, form record, CRM field, and conversion upload. At each step, confirm whether the identifier is present, stored, and passed unchanged. This isolates collection problems from attribution or eligibility limitations.
Finally, compare measurement at the same level: click records, sessions, leads, and attributed conversions are different counts. Privacy restrictions, consent choices, attribution windows, and modeling can all prevent them from matching exactly.
