LinkedIn Conversions API Audit: A Step-by-Step Guide

A LinkedIn Conversions API audit should answer whether the right events arrive from the right source, can be matched to the intended account and campaign, are counted once, and represent a useful business decision. LinkedIn’s Conversions API overview describes a server connection for online and offline conversion data. LinkedIn also explains that Conversions API can be used with the Insight Tag, with deduplication when the same event is sent through both. These capabilities are not proof that a campaign generated qualified revenue.

State the audit decision

Decide whether to validate, repair, migrate, expand, or hold the integration. Define account, campaigns, conversion rules, event types, data owners, privacy basis, reporting window, and rollback. An audit without a decision owner becomes a payload inspection detached from campaign and sales consequences.

Inventory the current setup

Record the Insight Tag, Conversions API or partner integration, conversion rules, account URNs, campaign associations, API version, access token owner, event source, fields, timestamps, identifier strategy, retry logic, and monitoring. Note recent migrations and deprecations. Do not assume that a token, a green partner screen, or a successful HTTP response proves that a usable event was attributed.

Define event meaning

Create a dictionary for submit, qualified lead, booked meeting, opportunity, and closed outcome. For each event, specify source system, evidence, owner, timestamp, conversion rule, campaign association, value, and expiry. Keep browser events, server events, and CRM states distinct even when they share a business label.

Trace one event end to end

Use a synthetic or approved test record. Trace source creation, consent, identifier capture, transformation, payload, API response, conversion rule, campaign association, Campaign Manager reporting, CRM record, and exclusion from production totals. Test missing identifiers, delayed events, retries, duplicate requests, invalid timestamps, and an event that should not be sent.

Classify each break as collection, transformation, authentication, delivery, match, association, reporting, or business-definition failure. Fix the earliest supported break first.

Audit matching and identifiers

Review the allowed user identifiers, first-party click ID where used, lead or external IDs, normalisation, hashing, consent, and retention. LinkedIn’s current schema documentation should be used for exact field names and version requirements. Never place a private token, raw sensitive value, or unnecessary personal data in a page, spreadsheet, or article example.

If the same event is sent by browser and server, confirm the event ID and conversion-rule design required for deduplication. A larger count after adding CAPI can be a duplicate problem rather than improved coverage.

Use the versioned CAPI schema as a contract for required and optional fields, then record any account-specific mapping in the audit board. Test the event ID, lead or external identifier, event time, value, and user object together; a field can be syntactically valid while its meaning is wrong for the business stage. Review normalisation before hashing and confirm that the same identifier is not reused for unrelated people or events.

Check campaign association

Verify that each conversion rule is associated with the campaigns whose outcomes it is meant to inform. Check account scope, shared versus owned rules where relevant, active status, attribution settings, and historical changes. A correctly ingested event that is not associated with the intended campaign may be invisible to the decision the team is trying to make.

Check data quality and latency

Compare source count, accepted payload count, matched count, attributed count, deduplicated count, and CRM outcome count by day or cohort. Record event and upload times separately. Review retries, backfills, late events, timezone, and conversion windows. Do not compare an immature CRM cohort with a fully processed platform cohort without marking the difference.

Review privacy and ownership

Confirm lawful basis, notice, consent, retention, access, deletion, vendor terms, and regional restrictions with the responsible privacy owner. LinkedIn states that advertisers control what data they share and remain responsible for compliant use. Assign owners for the integration, conversion definitions, campaign association, monitoring, and incident response.

Compare browser and server cohorts

Select a period with enough events to compare Insight Tag, CAPI, deduplicated, attributed, and CRM counts. Explain gaps caused by consent, browser limits, offline timing, matching, or campaign association. Do not use a higher server count as proof of better performance until duplicate handling and mature business outcomes are checked. A clean audit may conclude that the integration is technically healthy but not yet useful for optimisation because the qualified event is too sparse or unstable.

Run a bounded repair

Choose one event family and one campaign group. Repair the first break, keep a before snapshot, define a completeness and quality check, and compare a mature cohort. If running Insight Tag and CAPI together, verify deduplication before using counts for optimisation. Keep a rollback path and an explicit hold if API access or version migration is unresolved.

Reconcile the audit conclusion with the business owner’s decision. If the technical feed is complete but sales acceptance is undefined, the next action is a stage-definition workshop rather than a new endpoint. If campaign association is correct but the page or form attracts poor-fit requests, route the issue to the offer and lead-quality owner. This separation prevents a reliable transport layer from being credited with demand it did not create.

Verdicts

Pass: event meaning, delivery, matching, association, deduplication, privacy, and outcomes align.

Repair: a named technical or data-quality break is reproducible.

Business-definition hold: events arrive, but they do not represent a stable qualified outcome.

Platform hold: access, version, permissions, privacy, or campaign association is unresolved.

The LinkedIn CAPI Audit Board is complete when it inventories setup, defines events, traces one record, checks matching and deduplication, verifies campaign association and latency, assigns owners, and states a reversible decision.
