Owned, earned, and paid media describe broad ways a business reaches an audience. Owned media uses channels the organization operates, earned media comes from independent attention or sharing, and paid media buys distribution. Most campaigns use a mix, but each channel offers different control and evidence.

Owned media gives direct publishing control
A company website, blog, email program, or community space can be an owned channel. The organization controls the content and publishing schedule, though it does not own audience attention or guarantee that subscribers will see every message.
Owned channels can support repeat engagement and durable resources. Their limits include the time needed to build an audience, platform dependencies such as email or hosting providers, and the need to maintain consent and subscriber preferences.
Earned media depends on independent attention
Earned media includes editorial coverage, recommendations, citations, and organic sharing that the organization did not directly buy as ad placement. It can provide credibility because another party chose to discuss the work, but the organization has less control over timing, wording, or reach.
Earned coverage is not guaranteed by publishing a press release or asking for a link. Keep claims verifiable, make useful evidence available, and measure referral quality without treating every mention as equivalent.
Paid media buys distribution
Paid media includes search, social, display, sponsorship, and other placements purchased under a media agreement. It can offer audience and timing controls and generate scale more quickly, but performance depends on costs, competition, creative, landing experiences, and measurement quality.
Ad delivery and attributed conversions do not prove incremental impact. Use holdouts or other suitable evaluation when the decision requires evidence that the paid exposure created additional outcomes.
Coordinate the mix around a task
Use paid distribution to reach a defined audience or test a message, owned content to explain the offer or answer a question, and earned attention to extend trust and discovery when it occurs. Assign each channel a role and set rules for attribution overlap.
The categories describe distribution control, not content quality. Useful campaigns connect them while keeping audience expectations and measurement definitions clear.
