Lead-to-opportunity conversion rate measures the share of a defined lead cohort that becomes a qualified sales opportunity within a stated period. It helps teams examine progression from an initial response to a sales-qualified stage, but it is meaningful only when “lead,” “opportunity,” and the observation window are consistently defined.
Lead-to-opportunity formula
Lead-to-opportunity conversion rate = leads that become opportunities ÷ eligible lead cohort × 100
If 30 of 240 eligible leads become opportunities within 90 days, the cohort’s conversion rate is 12.5%. State whether the denominator includes every form submission, only accepted leads, or another group. A rate from raw inquiries answers a different question from a rate among leads that passed qualification.
Define the stages and cohort
Choose observable entry and exit criteria. An opportunity should represent a real sales process under the organization’s definition, not a record created simply to improve a report. Use a cohort start date and allow comparable time for leads to progress; a recently created cohort may appear to convert poorly because it has not matured.
Document how you handle duplicates, disqualified records, reopened opportunities, multiple contacts at one account, and leads that are already customers. Check that the CRM preserves stage history so a current status does not erase the timing and path that produced it.
Interpret the rate with lead quality
A higher rate can reflect stronger audience fit, clearer qualification, or a change in sales acceptance. It can also result from a narrower denominator or a lower opportunity threshold. Pair the rate with opportunity value, disqualification reasons, progression, win rate, and customer outcomes.

Use conversion rate to investigate handoffs
- Compare progression by source, segment, offer, and qualification status.
- Review time to first human response and follow-up completion.
- Inspect rejection and recycle reasons for recurring patterns.
- Check whether stage definitions or routing rules changed.
- Trace a sample of records from initial response through opportunity creation.
Do not optimize the metric by creating more opportunities with weak evidence or excluding difficult leads without a shared rule. A useful conversion rate supports a better handoff and a clearer understanding of demand, not a bigger number at any cost.
