Define Lead Nurture Re-Entry and Exit Rules

so-editorial-694-copper-ruler-binder

Lead nurture workflows need clear rules for when a person enters, pauses, exits, or becomes eligible to return. Without those rules, contacts can receive overlapping messages or re-enter a sequence that no longer fits their situation.

Set entry and exit conditions

Define an eligible event and audience, such as an opted-in resource request or a specific lifecycle status. List the conditions that end the sequence: a sales handoff, opt-out, disqualifying response, or completed objective.

Choose whether reaching an opportunity or becoming a customer triggers a new communication path. Make the transition explicit so nurture does not continue by default.

Define safe re-entry rules

A person may become eligible again after a meaningful change, such as a new product interest or a completed prior sequence. Decide which signals count and whether a cooling-off period is required.

Do not use a page view alone as a universal trigger. Check identity confidence, consent, frequency limits, and whether the content is still relevant.

Coordinate with sales and other programs

Specify what happens when an owner is actively working the record. Give sales a way to pause or resume nurture with a reason, and ensure the automation respects that status.

Check suppression across email, events, and paid audiences. A person should not receive conflicting messages because each system applies a different lifecycle definition.

Audit the workflow over time

Test entry, exit, re-entry, duplicate triggers, and opt-out cases in a sandbox. Review enrollment and exit reports after changes to confirm that behavior matches the documented rules.

Our guide to B2B lead nurturing covers the timing and content decisions behind a sequence.
