Sales quota attainment measures credited sales against a defined target for a period. The formula is simple, but the result depends on what counts as credited performance, which quota applies, and whether all representatives had comparable time and opportunity to sell.

Use a consistent formula
A common formula is credited sales ÷ quota × 100. If a representative has $80,000 in eligible sales against a $100,000 quarterly quota, attainment is 80%. Define whether credited sales means bookings, annual contract value, recognized revenue, units, or another measure.
State the time period and currency. For multi-year or usage-based contracts, document how the value is credited. Do not compare attainment calculated from bookings with a quota defined on recognized revenue.
Account for quota changes and ramp
A quota may be prorated for start dates, leave, territory changes, or role changes. Record effective dates and the rule used to calculate each person’s target. If a quota is changed mid-period, preserve both the original plan and the approved adjustment for auditability.
Representatives still onboarding should be compared against the appropriate ramp quota or cohort policy. Treating a new hire as if they had a full-period target can distort team performance and capacity forecasts.
Compare cohorts fairly
Segment by role, territory, tenure, sales motion, and market conditions when those factors influence opportunity. Show both attainment and quota or credited-sales amounts; a percentage alone can hide differences in target size and deal mix.
Use distributions and cohort counts, not just an average. A small team can have a high mean because of one large contract. Compare periods with similar seasonality and account coverage.
Use attainment as one signal
Quota attainment can support capacity planning, compensation operations, and coaching, but it does not diagnose why performance changed. Pair it with pipeline quality, win rate, sales-cycle length, territory potential, and churn or renewal outcomes where relevant.
A trustworthy report names the quota version, credited-sales definition, timing, and cohort rules.
