Link-click tracking can show whether visitors use important navigation, download resources, or leave for an external destination. A useful event captures a meaningful link action and enough context to explain it. Tracking every anchor equally creates noisy data and can obscure the links that support a real decision.

Choose which links matter
Start with a question: do users reach a pricing page, download a guide, call a phone number, or follow a link to an external booking system? Define which link actions answer that question. Internal page navigation is often already measured as page views, so an extra click event should have a specific purpose.
Separate outbound destinations, phone links, email links, and file downloads if they need different reporting or follow-up. Give each event a consistent name and use parameters such as destination URL, link text, and page location where they are available.
Configure and test the click trigger
Enable the relevant built-in click variables, then create a Just Links trigger with conditions that identify the destination or link type. Limit it to the intended pages or domains. For links that open new tabs or rely on JavaScript handlers, confirm that the browser event is observed before navigation completes.
Use GTM Preview to click the link once and inspect the event. Check the URL and text values, and make sure the tag does not fire on unrelated anchors or twice for a single action.
- Avoid using visible link text as the only condition when text changes often.
- Exclude navigation and footer links unless they answer the measurement question.
- Compare GTM events with the destination platform after publication.
Interpret clicks as intent signals
A click shows an interaction, not a completed outcome. A click to a scheduler is not necessarily a booked meeting, and a download click is not proof that a file was consumed. Use the event as an intermediate funnel signal and connect it to downstream completion data when the decision requires it.
