In analytics, normalization and standardization are two ways to rescale numerical variables, but terminology can vary across fields. Min-max normalization often maps values to a fixed range; standardization often expresses values as deviations from a mean in standard-deviation units. Neither method fixes incorrect or biased data.

Min-max normalization rescales a range
A common min-max formula is (value − minimum) ÷ (maximum − minimum), which maps the observed minimum and maximum to 0 and 1. It can make variables with different units easier to compare in some models or visualizations.
The result depends on the chosen minimum and maximum. Extreme outliers can compress most values into a narrow band, and new values outside the original range may fall below 0 or above 1 unless the method is adjusted.
Standardization expresses distance from the mean
A common standardization formula is (value − mean) ÷ standard deviation. The transformed values have a mean near zero and a standard deviation near one for the data used to calculate those statistics.
Standardization does not guarantee a normal distribution. Outliers can influence the mean and standard deviation, so robust alternatives may be more suitable when distributions are heavily skewed.
Choose by the analytical task
Some algorithms and distance calculations are sensitive to variable scale; rescaling can help ensure that units such as dollars do not dominate counts simply because their numeric values are larger. Tree-based models may be less sensitive, while a chart may need a different transformation for readability.
Fit scaling parameters on the training data when evaluating predictive models, then apply the same parameters to validation and future data. Calculating from all data before a split can leak information into the model.
Keep business interpretation intact
Preserve raw values and document the transformation, reference population, and treatment of missing values. A scaled metric should not replace a source measure when stakeholders need to understand actual spend, leads, or revenue.
Normalization and standardization rescale numbers for analysis. Select the method that matches the use case and make the transformation reproducible.
