Shopify Checkout Extensibility Analytics: A Post-Migration Tracking Checklist

After changing a Shopify checkout, verify analytics as carefully as the customer experience. Checkout customization and tracking mechanisms can change independently, so an order that completes successfully does not prove that analytics, advertising, and consent signals still work.

Start with a before-and-after event map

Write down the existing checkout events and where each is created: Shopify customer events, an app, a tag manager, or another integration. Then map the new implementation to the same customer actions. Focus on checkout start, contact or shipping steps where available, payment selection if measurable, and purchase confirmation.

Do not assume that an event name or field exposed in one implementation will be available in another. Keep a record of required parameters such as currency, value, item identifiers, and a stable order reference, and note any fields the new setup cannot provide.

Test the paths customers actually use

  • Run a test order on desktop and mobile.
  • Try the payment methods and accelerated checkout options customers commonly use.
  • Test a declined or abandoned flow where the platform permits it.
  • Check a returning customer path and any post-purchase step.

Use the platform’s preview or test mode for safe validation. Confirm consent choices are respected before optional analytics or advertising events are sent. If payment takes a customer to another domain or app, verify that the journey returns with the correct order context.

Reconcile the purchase event

Inspect a controlled completed order in the destination tools. Check the event count, transaction or order ID, currency, value, and item details. Reload the confirmation page and revisit the order status to test whether the purchase is sent again. A migration is not complete until the new setup passes both an event-level test and a small order reconciliation.

Monitor after release

Compare order counts and revenue across Shopify and measurement tools for a short period, allowing for time zones, consent loss, refunds, and platform attribution rules. Annotate the release date so changes in the reports can be interpreted. If a discrepancy appears, isolate the event source first; changing several tags at once makes the cause harder to identify.
