Retail Media Networks: Formats, Economics, and Measurement

so-editorial-447-cup-portfolio-still-life

A retail media network (RMN) is an advertising offering built around a retailer’s media inventory, shopper relationships, and commerce data. It can include sponsored placements on a retailer’s site or app and off-site campaigns that use retailer-defined audiences elsewhere. The exact products and measurement vary by retailer.

Common retail media formats

On-site placements include sponsored products, search results, category pages, and display inventory within a retailer’s digital properties. Off-site media extends campaigns to other publishers or platforms using retailer audience segments. In-store media, such as digital screens, may also be part of a broader network. Each format reaches shoppers in a different context and has different costs and reporting.

The appeal and the trade-offs

Retailers can connect media exposure to commerce activity within their own environment and may offer insights based on first-party shopper relationships. Advertisers may gain access to high-intent shopping contexts. However, audience definitions, fees, attribution windows, reporting access, and data portability can differ widely, making comparisons difficult.

Evaluate beyond platform ROAS

  • Separate attributed sales from incremental sales; a purchase may have happened without the ad.
  • Track new-to-brand or new-customer outcomes where the retailer provides a clear definition.
  • Compare ad cost with product margin, promotion expense, and retailer fees.
  • Review reach, frequency, placement, and audience overlap across networks.
  • Use holdouts or geographic tests when the scale and retailer capabilities allow.

Build a measurement plan before spending

Define products, campaign objectives, attribution windows, and the business outcome in advance. Request clear documentation for how sales are attributed, what data is available after a campaign, and whether different placements can be evaluated separately. Start with a bounded test and compare against a reasonable baseline.

Retail media can be valuable when its audience and commerce context fit the product. A disciplined comparison accounts for margin, incrementality, and data limitations rather than choosing a network based only on its reported return.
