Hreflang Tags: A Practical Guide to International SEO

Hreflang annotations help search engines understand which language or regional version of a page is appropriate for a visitor. They do not translate a page or guarantee a ranking change; they clarify the relationship among equivalent URLs so search systems can select a relevant version.

Choose the right language and region codes

An hreflang value uses a language code and, optionally, a region code, such as en, en-GB, or fr-CA. Use a region only when the page is genuinely targeted to that market. Avoid inventing values for language variants or treating a country code as a language.

Build a complete alternate set

Each page in a group should identify itself and its alternate versions. The references should be reciprocal: if page A lists page B as an alternate, page B should list page A. Each URL should be a valid, indexable canonical page, and the language annotation should point to the preferred URL for that version.

  • Include a self-reference for each localized page.
  • Use absolute, final URLs that return successfully and resolve to the canonical page.
  • Keep the language-region labels consistent across all pages in the group.
  • Use x-default only when there is a genuine fallback destination for users without a matching version.

Select an implementation method

Hreflang can be expressed in HTML link elements, XML sitemaps, or HTTP headers for non-HTML documents. Choose a method the team can maintain reliably. Avoid publishing conflicting sets in several places unless the implementation is intentionally synchronized and routinely checked.

Common errors and validation

Frequent problems include missing return links, localized pages pointing to redirects, a canonical URL that conflicts with the hreflang target, and language codes that do not match the page. Validate the full cluster after template changes and URL migrations, not only one page in isolation.

Use hreflang for equivalent pages that serve different language or regional audiences. If the content is not meaningfully equivalent, create a clear site structure and internal links rather than labeling unrelated pages as alternates.
