Amazon Top-of-Search Bid Adjustment vs. Dynamic Bidding

Pexels rdne 7889205

Amazon top-of-search bid adjustments and dynamic bidding are separate campaign controls. A placement adjustment changes how strongly a bid is weighted for a selected placement; dynamic bidding changes bids in response to estimated conversion likelihood. When both are enabled, the final auction bid can reflect both controls.

Placement adjustments select where to compete harder

A top-of-search adjustment is intended to increase competitiveness for the top portion of search results, subject to the campaign type and settings available. It does not guarantee that an ad will appear there; auction rank, relevance, eligibility, and competition still matter.

Evaluate the placement using impressions, clicks, conversion outcomes, and spend. A high placement share can be useful, but position alone is not a business result.

  • Check which placements the campaign supports.
  • Compare top-of-search results with other eligible placements.
  • Use product margin and inventory as guardrails.

Dynamic bidding estimates opportunity

Dynamic bidding can adjust the base bid upward or downward based on the system’s estimate of a purchase opportunity. It addresses the estimated value of an auction, while a placement adjustment expresses a preference for a particular location.

The two controls can interact. A campaign with a high placement modifier and an upward dynamic strategy may bid more aggressively than the base bid suggests. Review the current platform rules and the campaign’s effective spend before making a large adjustment.

  • Record base bids, placement modifiers, and bid strategy together.
  • Change one control at a time when possible.
  • Watch spend and sales across the same date range.

Run a placement test carefully

Use a period with adequate eligible traffic and stable listings. Compare the result with a control or prior baseline, accounting for price, promotions, competition, and stock changes. A placement test can show correlation, but controlled experiments are better for estimating incremental effect.

Do not raise placement bids simply because a placement receives more impressions. The adjustment should answer a defined question about profitable visibility.

A high top-of-search adjustment can increase costs even when the placement produces a stronger click rate. Review marginal performance: compare the additional spend with the additional orders and contribution it produced, rather than comparing the placement’s average metric with the campaign average.
